About the Work:

Meditation remains at the heart of Buddhism as a path towards enlightenment and detachment from the material world. During practice, one progresses through a series of inner stages towards spiritual freedom.
In simplified essence, there are three stages. The first is the external, the starting point where one remains conscious of surrounding noises. Next is the internal, where the mind is heard. A train of thought emerges, replacing external sounds as the focus of concentration. Finally, one reaches anatta, the state of nothingness where self and attachment dissolve. Meditation Within (2024) guides its listeners through this inner journey as if meditating in a Buddhist temple.
Written as part of Britten Sinfonia's OPUS 1 composer scheme.
Performance:

Premiered by the Britten Sinfonia Trio on 21 September 2024 at All Saints' Church (The Painted Church), Cambridge.
